10/27/15 - Learn more Thursday: 'Proactive Strategies in Cyber Security: Are You Ready?'

Information security has evolved and in the last few years there has been renewed interest in the subject worldwide. This is evident from the many standards and certifications now available to guide security strategy.

Join the Office of Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State for a "Proactive Strategies in Cyber Security: Are You Ready?" seminar on Thursday [Oct. 29] from 2-3:30 p.m. in the Bost Extension Center theater.

Identity theft and phishing are ongoing concerns. Security mechanisms have gotten a lot better and are generally implemented by universities wanting to adhere to good institutional governance, and so attackers are now looking to the weak link in the chain, namely the individual user. It is far easier to attack an individual than attempt to penetrate sophisticated institutional systems.

Seminar topics of interest include Hackers: How Easy Do We Make It?, The Cloud: What's Safe?, Creating a Safer Internet by Breaking the Habit of "Yes," and Data Privacy: How Private Is It?

The moderator for this seminar will be Dave Dampier, the director of the Distributed Analytics and Security Institute at MSU. Panelists include Tom Ritter, security and compliance officer with the Office of the Chief Information Officer; Trey Breckenridge, director of the High Performance Computing Collaboratory; Wes McGrew, DASI assistant research professor; and Rob Crossler, assistant professor in the Department of Management Information Systems.
