3/25/14 - Honors students invited to apply for summer research grants

Shackouls Honors College students at Mississippi State University are invited to apply for undergraduate summer research grants.

This program provides up to $2,000 for honors students to pursue research projects with MSU faculty. Research may be performed on campus or off during the summer -- typically for 20 hours a week for eight to 10 weeks. It an excellent opportunity for students to participate in research.

The application may be found at

Faculty are asked to encourage the honors students they are planning on doing summer research with to apply for this grant. It will give excellent experience in grantsmanship, as well as -- possibly -- supporting their work.

Note that while grants are rarely able to fully fund every project, the program will partially fund projects determined to be worthwhile. If the student researcher is planning on living on campus, MSU Housing has made rooms available at Herbert Hall at a discount. If further assistance is required for campus housing, please have the student include it in the student's budget request.

The deadline for applications is April 5.

Students will be required to have an MSU faculty mentor approve and supervise their research. Along with the student's description of his or her research project, he or she will be required to submit a letter of support and commitment from his or her faculty mentor and a preliminary budget. The faculty member's letter must include a commitment to supervise the student's work and manage the disbursement the grant.

Students are also encouraged to seek support from their academic department so that the honors office can leverage limited resources and serve as many deserving students as possible.
