11/13/14 - Startup Weekend Starkville kicks off Friday

In partnership with Mississippi State University's Entrepreneurship Center, the first Startup Weekend Starkville, an intense 54-hour crash course in entrepreneurship, will take place Friday [Nov. 14] through Sunday [Nov. 16].

The event, which concludes the 2014 Startup Weekend Mississippi statewide tour organized by Innovate Mississippi, will bring together entrepreneurs, programmers, developers, graphic artists and business-minded people to build and develop software and internet-based business concepts. Powered by Google for Entrepreneurs, Startup Weekends operate worldwide. The Starkville event will take place in MSU's McCool Hall.

Registered participants, including students and professionals, will pitch original ideas and form teams around their favorite concepts. Then, they will work to develop full-fledged business plans with the guidance of professional coaches.

"For more than a decade, the cultural movement of entrepreneurship has surged at Mississippi State and we're thrilled to take another step forward by hosting the first-ever Startup Weekend Starkville," said Kathy Gelston, MSU associate vice president of corporate engagement and economic development.

Sharon Oswald, dean of MSU's College of Business, said MSU students have consistently been top competitors during similar business challenges.

"We're always looking for ways to encourage students and faculty to take action on their ideas and test them in the real marketplace," Oswald said.
