Safer, Smarter Construction: Integrating Technology and Student Well-Being
Dr. Saeed Rokooei, Associate Professor and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Building Construction Science, is currently researching how internal and external factors influence the quality of student learning in construction science. His research collects insights that guide curriculum enhancements to drive long term improvements in the industry.
Rokooei’s work focuses on three distinct areas: enhancing construction education, leveraging new technologies, and addressing the link between construction worker safety and mental health. His inspiration stems from his background as a civil engineer and instructor, focusing on producing highly skilled graduates.
“I see these topics as connected pieces that affect both my work as an instructor and our students as future professionals,” said Rokooei. “Improving any of these areas adds meaning to my professional life,”
A recent study using construction simulations yielded two key findings. First, research showed that while male and female students performed equally well, female students reported feeling they learned three times more than their male peers. Second, the research uncovered a pressing issue in student welfare.
“I discovered that construction students tend to have poor sleep habits and even expect those issues to worsen after graduation,” said Dr. Rokooei. “These insights show the importance of improving both educational experiences and overall well-being, challenging the traditional focus on only physical safety.”
Rokooei also explores how emerging tools, such as virtual reality for hazard identification and drones for site management, can enhance both learning and professional practice. He emphasizes that collaboration is key to maximizing impact. He actively works with undergraduate and graduate students, colleagues across disciplines, and international partners.
“These collaborations often bring insights, tools, and outcomes that would be difficult to achieve alone,” said Rokooei. “The combined expertise and teamwork have consistently led to stronger and more meaningful results.”
Looking forward, Rokooei plans to continue advancing studies that connect education, technology, and mental health. His long-term goal is to support safer, smarter, and more sustainable construction practices across the industry.
