Dr. Moorhead is a Billie J. Ball Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of two research institutes at Mississippi State University: The Geosystems Research Institute (GRI) and the Northern Gulf Institute (NGI). He is on the Board of Directors of the IEEE Computer Society’s Technical Committee on Visualization and Graphics, having served as Chair, Vice-Chair for Conferences (twice), and Conference Chair over the past 25 years.
He has received the Career Achievement Award and the Outstanding Engineering Research Award from the MSU Bagley College of Engineering and is a member of the ECE Hall of Fame at North Carolina State University. He has lead visualization research and development efforts in support of a plethora of placed-based problems (physical oceanography, coastal / severe weather, flooding, etc.).
After receiving his PhD in 1985 from North Carolina State University, Dr. Moorhead was a Research Staff Member in the Image Technologies Group at IBM’s Research Center in New York before joining MSU in 1989. His research has migrated from image processing to visualization of large-scale computer simulations to most recently using autonomous systems to advance agriculture performance and understand the environment.
